THE BRAND

Black Girl Beach Day™ is a beach event centered around women and girls of color. It promotes solidarity, inclusivity and sisterhood amongst all black identifying persons in all shapes and shades and exists to reclaim oceanic and aquatic spaces. The event was born summer 2017 by Germany Lancaster of Newark, New Jersey. What started as a meet up with just 30 girls has expanded to include a range of hosts, djs, community leaders, arts & wellness facilitators and 1,000 patrons. Black Girl Beach Day™ has become a fun summer staple and bonding experience for women of color on the east coast where they can tan, swim and, slay in harmony.

THE ROLE & THE WORK

For Black Girl Beach Day™, I served as both creative director and designer. Though the brand had an established identity, it lacked cohesion. I updated the logo, making it a bit more modern, and created a color palette that expressed the vibrancy and brightness of the beach. The pattern is composed of handdrawn b’s, g’s, and d’s, meant to create contrast against the geometric logo and brand typefaces. Translating the new brand style to social, the photography and assets mimic the energy and fun that the identity creates.
